Thought should be put into window treatments at the design stage of the home.
What are your priorities – daylight control, privacy, room darkening, insulation, energy harvesting, whole home control, scheduling, integration?
If whole home automated control is desired, it is always better to pre-wire for power and communication during construction. However, very good wireless, retrofit options are now available.
MEASURING
Final measurements should not be taken until the window opening is completely finished.
For roller shades being mounted inside the opening, be sure to measure at the top where the shade is going to be installed. The best fit requires window measurements accurate to within 1/8″. Check for out-of-square/ plumb window jambs as well as window hardware that could interfere with the shade’s travel.
I recommend having your windows professionally measured by the same person responsible for the actual install.
ORDERING
Today many window treatments can be ordered online directly from the manufacturer.
Just be sure to do your due diligence on the system and fabrics being offered. Manufacturer information and product specs should be available for review. If not, that may be a red flag.
